Deborah Karpatkin opened her solo law practice in 1991, building on a legal career that has included private practice, academia, and service to advocacy/nonprofit organizations.
Today, the Law Office of Deborah H. Karpatkin serves a wide range of clients, in a wide range of workplace matters, both litigation and transactional. Her diverse clients include individuals and small business owners; executives in transition and lower-wage workers; and professionals in health care, law, journalism, and faith-based organizations. Her clients work in corporations and non-profit organizations; the military and the government; technology and finance; and academia and the media.
Ms. Karpatkin is a trusted advisor to her colleagues and to nonprofit organizations. She is an executive board member of the National Employment Lawyers’ Association of New York, and a member of the NYC Bar Association, serving currently on its Military Affairs and Sex and Law Committees. She serves as co-General Counsel to the New York Civil Liberties Union, where she was a board member for 23 years.
A graduate of Columbia Law School, Ms. Karpatkin is regularly invited to teach in her areas of expertise. She has recently addressed seminary graduates about clergy contracts; employment rights lawyers about advanced deposition techniques; and military rights lawyers and counselors about conscientious objectors. She has published articles on Conscientious Objector law, and on the applicability of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, after the Hobby Lobby decision, to the rights of military conscientious objectors.
